Whatever Happened to Equality of Opportunity?

For the past hundred years, society has been turning away from the idea of equality of opportunity, and gradually embracing the idea of equality of outcomes. Since the New Deal and Great Society, Americans have debated which of these paths to pursue—and the role of government in ensuring them. Policy proposals predominantly focus on the government—not individuals—as the arbiter of outcomes.

The “land of opportunity” is becoming the land of government-ensured outcomes.

The latter doesn’t have quite the same ring, but should it be pursued for the sake of fairness? And is this path inevitable?

To examine how we got here—and what the future may hold—the Hoover Institution recently published a new eBook, “Whatever Happened To Equality Of Opportunity?”

And today, you can get this important resource sent straight to your inbox for FREE.

Hoover fellow David Davenport explores questions like:

  • What is meant by “equity”?
  • Is America ready to trade in being the “land of opportunity” in order to pursue equality exclusively?
  • Is America still the “land of opportunity”?
  • Can equality of opportunity be saved, and are there reasons to be optimistic about its future?

If you’re concerned about where the current debate between equality of opportunity and equality of outcomes is headed, you’ll want to read this eBook.
