For the past hundred years, society has been turning away from the idea of equality of opportunity, and gradually embracing the idea of equality of outcomes. Since the New Deal and Great Society, Americans have debated which of these paths to pursue—and the role of government in ensuring them. Policy proposals predominantly focus on the government—not individuals—as the arbiter of outcomes.
The “land of opportunity” is becoming the land of government-ensured outcomes.
The latter doesn’t have quite the same ring, but should it be pursued for the sake of fairness? And is this path inevitable?
